My inner diva is telling me that this summer is *the summer* to dare to be BRAVE … and thanks to bikini stylist Audrey Lopez, you just might find me creating a sensation at a beach near you wearing one of her super sexy crochet bikinis. It will be the envy of all my girlfriends, especially when I know they will be searching *heaven* and earth to find the most diva-li-cious swimsuit to wear this summer.

With the help of Audrey’s book, Crochet Your Very Own Lopez String Bikinis, and a little bit of creativity, I begin my quest for the perfect bikini. I’ve decided it will a delicious chocolate brown color with sweet daffodil yellow accents.

Audrey uses only basic crochet stitches in her book which makes it easy for any beginner to get started. For additional step-by-step instructions on how to do simple patterns, she suggests checking out youtube.com videos. Just be sure that “you’re getting instructions for American terms as oppose to British terms, single crochet in American terms is the same as a double crochet in British terms”. Depending on your level of expertise and the size and style that is right for you, making a bikini that’s perfect for you can only be a 10-hour project.

Of course …. I am spoiled rotten because Audrey is gracious enough to lend me a helping hand. So I’d like to pass on her words of wisdom on how to get started the right way with this project ….

1. Read the instructions carefully on finding the right size top and right style bikini bottom for you. For your bikini bottom, find a favourite bikini of yours and measure the rise by using a measuring tape to measure from the centre front to the centre back. This will help you determine if you want a regular rise, hip-hugger, or ultra-low rise bikini bottom.

2. Buying the right yarn and hook is very important. My favourite yarn to use is Sandnes Mandarin Petit with a 3.00mm hook.

3. Buying the right swimsuit lining is also very important. It should be a nude colour, and very thin with a two-way stretch.

4. Consistency is important. If you find that one day you’re making your stitches a little loose and the next day a little tighter, you’re not being consistent and it will show. This can also happen if you start the project and ask someone else to finish it for you.

5. The finishing instructions are most important. If you’re not sure how to weave in the ends and pictures aren’t clear, visit your local yarn shop and ask a professional. A neat and clean finish will make a big difference in your bikini. You shouldn’t feel big bumps in your bikini from the loose ends.

After losing almost 40lbs in the last year, a little bit of sexy indulgence is in order, don’t you agree? I can’t wait to get started …. and I can’t wait to *shimmy* it down to the beach. It’s going to be a terrific summer!
