“When you do nothing, you feel overwhelmed and powerless. But when you get involved, you feel the sense of hope and accomplishment that comes from knowing you are working to make things better. ” – Maya Angelou
This is your chance to help The National Institute of Environmental Health Scences (NIEHS) in their long-term nationwide investigation to explore and gather data on how environmental factors – homes, workplaces, and communities – and genes affect the chances of women getting breast cancer. If you have a sister who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, the Sister Study needs you!
Since the study’s inception, NIEHS is close to reaching their goal of enrolling 50,000 diverse women from all walks of life. In order for everyone to benefit from the results of this landmark breast cancer research study, they are still actively searching for specific groups that are underrepresented:
- African Americans, Latinas, Asians and Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans between ages 35-74.
- Caucasian women between the ages of 55-74 or with less than a bachelor degree.
Sisters Corrine Jennings and Minnie Hunt decided to participate in the Sister Study to help find out what caused their sister’s cancer. “We got in touch with the Sister Study and they mailed us some forms. And we filled them out and mailed them back in.” It’s a gift of hope that only a sister can give.
To learn more on how you can participate, visit their website at www.sisterstudy.org and answer the screening questions. You can also reach them toll free at 1-877-4SISTER. All information provided is strictly confidential.
