While it was not exactly a Mediterranean diet (although it did share alot of the same elements), my Grandmothers, Granduncles, and others of their generation ate an exclusively Kosher diet with very little meat (except chicken soup!) and they all never had a problem with weight gain and had all their teeth and kept vigorous up into their late 80s.

I would like to see a study about diets, like the Mediterranean, that explore how the region where the diet is "discovered" plays a role in life span, sense of well being, and other factors that make so many "life enhancing" programs popular.

I haven't seen a genetic comparison either, which would be interesting, because it plays such a huge role in how an individual ages and gains or looses weight.

There sure is a lot of stuff to look at...

I can vouch for the mediterranean diet though! Olive Oil, fish, walnuts, figs, pulses and very little meat... never did my grandmas and grandpas any harm all lived to a healthy late 90s and had most of their teeth and not a moments sickness.
