So you are looking in your mirror one day and you notice something new on (or specifically, under) your face: the dreaded double chin. What causes it? And more importantly, how can you get rid of your double chin?
Where Did That Thing Come From Anyways?
Your double chin is the result of excess fat and/or fluids building up underneath your jaw and around your neck. This can be the result of a lymphatic problem causing excessive fluid buildup, excess weight gain, poorly toned jaw muscles, or just natural slackening of your facial muscles and skin as a part of the aging process. Regardless of where it came from, there are several things you can do to get rid of your double chin for good.
Getting Rid of Your Double Chin
There are several easy exercises that you can do to help get that Siamese twin of a chin back into hiding where it belongs:
The first, and easiest, is to smile a lot. Smiling works muscles all over you face, including the ones underneath your jaw. This leads to better-toned muscles, and helps get rid of your double chin. Plus, smiling stimulates your limbic system, leading to a feeling of well being and elevating your mood.
You can also try massage along and underneath the jawline, if your double chin is caused by excess fluid retention. Massage can help stimulate circulation, which helps carry away the excess fluids and get rid of your double chin.
Along the same lines as the first suggestion, chewing gum can help exercise the muscles in your face and jaw, helping to get rid of your double chin. Just be sure to chew sugarless gum. You don’t want to get rid of your double chin only to add cavities.
Pretty much anything that exercises the face and neck muscles can help get rid of your double chin, and gives you an excuse to make goofy faces to boot!
Dieting and Your Double Chin
For most people, the best way to get rid of your double chin is to eat healthier and lose overall weight. There are many methods and schools of thought on this, but you should in general look for a regimen that will stimulate your metabolism, lower your caloric intake, and includes regular exercise. One of the most successful courses I have seen is the Carb Rotation Diet. This ebook outlines the best ways to increase your metabolism and burn fat (including your double chin fat) without having to go through “torture” dieting (which is quite counterproductive in most cases). Exercise regularly as outlined in combination with a good meal plan, and you will get rid of your double chin in no time!
Surgery: The Last Resort
The final and most drastic way to get rid of your double chin is cosmetic surgery. This procedure is called a “submental lipectomy”, or “neck lift”. Surgery should always be considered as a last resort after all other methods have failed. It is expensive (in the region of $2500), usually not covered under insurance, and, as with any surgery, can have complications.

Be careful with exercises where the primary movement is in the face. As you get rid of one problem, you develop a wrinkle where the muscles tighten under the skin!
I come from a family where no matter how skinny you may be a lot of us suffer from this double chin. I will have to try some of these exercises.
I don’t have the tightest chin, but I guess that’s alright for now. I have heard about facial exercises causing more wrinkles when you repeat certain expressions though, so I don’t know if it’s worth it yet.
double chins run in the family..i will just get use to having one for the rest of my life..i aint going to have surgey to remove it..if i do anything-it is going to be a tummy tuck,i had 3 kids and thats the hardest thing to get rid of-most can`t rid of their flabby tummies no matter what they do…

I remember my mother wearing this pressure thing at night. It was supposed to fix double chins over night.
I don’t think it worked!
Never heard of wearing a pressure thing to help. I have this picture of one in my mind now and I wouldn’t think it would be comfortable at all?
I remember hearing about the pressure wraps. Never seen one though. I really do not think I would get surgery for this. Not sure about the exercises as I have also heard to be cautious doing them. I do like the “smile a lot” idea. It is good for you either way.
SageMother, see, this is the reason why the girl at the store always says ~
*if you need this, you are going to need this also….*
Nothing ever is just a quick fix isn’t it?
I like the smiling tip, too… it helps tone and makes me and others feel good at the same time. The wrinkle issue could certainly pose a problem for people exercising faces too much, I agree!
Tater03, I know how that feels! I come from a family of thick arms….. and I’ve been trying to get rid of them ever since I can remember!
Jewel, talking about wrinkles…. my mother told me the other day not too have that much facial expressions or I will wake up at 37 *which is just a few months away* with forehead wrinkles.
My husband thinks it’s just hilarious that I am trying to be as *facially* unanimated while talking….
Purplefrogcat, wow, that’s like…. choosing the lesser of *two* evils.
I think I would like to have a tummy tuck instead if I had to chose between the two.
SageMother, I remember that! There was even an episode of I Love Lucy where Lucy pranced around with what looks like bandages covering her chin and most of her head.
LOL! It’s still around you know. It’s now called the face bra.
Tater03, if you want to see what it looks like you can view a previous article here about the face bra at http://www.thedivanetwork.com/2007/01/face-bra-maker-introduces-face-re.html.
It’s a good thing you only wear this at home
EviesEarth, smiling is also very good for your soul. That’s more therapeutic than anything else. And if it makes your chin a little bit firmer, then all the better!
Katharina,
I think also if you don’t take care of facial dry skin that will make your skin wrinkle more the older you get.
