When a resolution is made to lose weight, we need to look at our daily habits. Habits that have gotten us to where we are in life that requires to be changed in order to be successful in our lifetime commitment to be healthy. Then new habits need to be formed to keep us on track towards the ultimate quest.
What do you feel are the habits that has contributed to your weight gain? Not eating nutritional foods? Eating late at night? Not enough exercise? In order to understand what we need to work on, we need to know what the contributors are. Just as an example in my case, I am self employed and I work in front of the computer all day. Wild horses will have to drag me away to make a meal, or even eat a meal. Denying your body nourishment is not one of the top rules in losing weight as most of you already know.
What new habits are needed? I now walk every morning for an hour before I start my daily buzzing on the internet. The exercise, low cardio as it may seem, makes me feel energetic, healthy and alive. The alarm on my computer is now set to remind me that I need to have my meal and as an added measure, each reminder comes with motivational phrase or picture. How about you? What habits can be formed in your life that will make the difference?
Easier said than done? It does seem that way at first when you take the little baby steps to make a positive change to a destructive habit. Plan, plan, plan, as my dad would say. You need to plan your steps. Make a daily calendar and schedule your new habits, whatever they are - exercise schedule, meal planning, set meal times. It just gets easier every day.

Thanks for dropping by!
I have found that one of the things that helped me was before I started a diet of any kind I would keep a daily diary of what I ate everyday for atleast a month. Looking back over that helped me to see where I could make some changes in my overall eating habits.
It is *so* important to make a life change instead of just “dieting”… fad diets simply don’t work.
I think the worst habit for me has always been not knowing when to stop with portions. The size that portions should be would shock a lot of people, I’m sure.
oh god, i’ve been so busy with school, i haven’t had time to eat properly, which sounds like an excuse but when you’re as tired as me, it really doesn’t matter what goes in your mouth. i’ve been totally junk fooding and i haven’t weighed myself but i can feel myself really increasing in weight and i’m getting worried. ARGH!!!
I have such a hard time sticking to a weight loss program. I am an off and on type. After the new year a real commitment will start. I work at it now, just not as hard as I could.
To be honest around the holidy’s I don’t try anymore. I ruin it every time. But I figure you should be able to eat within reason what you want this time of year. That’s my excuse anyway.
I have found that the more busier that I am with work, and such the more I lose weight. When I am stuck in the house in front of the puter (as of lately) the weight comes back on.
It is so important to make life changes instead of just dieting. Walking is simple but sometimes getting outside isn’t, especially in cold weather of if you are worried about others seeing you. If you have stairs, try climbing and then going back down over and over again.
It’s amazing what just a little bit will do to change your metabolism.
I feel the exercise and weight loss industry has really done a good job of making it necessary to spend money. The suggestions in this article are great ways to avoid the traps big companies have created for the average person.
SageMother’s last blog post..Ga-Ga Over Glossi Glaze
You are so right about the big companies making people think that money has to be spent, SageMother. There are so many things we can do without spending a dime, let alone buying all those new “diet” foods with the newest fad diet’s logo on them!
Katharina, I know you’ve been by my slow eaters vs. fast eaters article, and I can honestly tell you….. portioning dont work either.
It just makes you more hungrier!
If you chew slowly, how much can you really eat before the 20 minutes is up and it finally reaches your brain to tell you that you are full?
Eat very, very slow. :0
Gilda, I’m sure whatever you’re junking does not go anywhere on your body.
I’ve seen your pictures on your blog
My youngest sister has the same genes as you from my asian mother, and she can eat everything on sight. We just don’t really know where it goes after that!
Diamondssaphire, you and a million other people in this world.
Almost everyone I know are planning their new years resolution to take the weight off.
Keep us posted
3Plus3, I think stress also contributes in the weight loss because when you are at work and very busy…. stress likes to poke its head anyway it can.
I work from home so I really have to watch the eating
SageMother, I too, have done the stairs up and down. That type of exercise is really very good for you and your heart.
Katharina, I still think there are some diet gizmos that are worth checking out.
But, I guess is all comes down to our generation - one that wants everything to come easy without have to do any hard work to achieve results.
If you went back to basics by regulating your food intake and exercise, it might take longer… but you actually might lose your fat on a long term basis.
I’m going for the slow and steady plan. Writing a blog about my weight loss journey has been the best thing I have done - no way I would have stuck with it this long without it.
Blogging about your weight loss is a great idea, John. I wish you much luck with the journey! Do you do entries daily… or once a week or what?
Something we do for New Year’s is buy a some of the junk foods we shun the rest of the year. We watch movies and munch to our hearts’ content. It’s a great, fun reward as we do a fairly good job of avoiding parties that tend to sabotage the weight control work we do the rest of the year.
I find that our stopping and setting aside this special time of decadence makes the “feast” more enjoyable as we are actually paying attention to what we are tasting, and it’s taste that we desire. It might help to pay close attention to flavor and smell when dealing with foods that can add weight. People tend to eat less if they don’t combine eating with other stimulus, like conversations and the tendency to get nervous at parties.

John, slow and steady is the best way to lose weight. It doesn’t appear overnight and wont disappear over night!
SageRave’s last blog post..Happy Holidays!
John, slow and steady is always a sure thing. I think it’s the hype of wanting to lose weight tomorrow that keeps dieters on a yo-yo trend.
Keeping a blog about your weight loss is always the best motivator. I started one about 2 years ago when I was about 60 lbs heavier and it feels weird reading over the journals from back then. The blog is http://www.thebikinibodydiet.com
Katharina, you should visit John’s website.
He’s been working very hard in keeping the weight off this holiday season that I should definitely *must* take notes for next year!
SageRave, what an excellent idea about your New Year’s tradition!
I have been reading over Ken Hoyt’s blog and I was going to do the *good* thing by making some of his excellent bean recipe to start the year off with a good healthy note.
But I think I’ll do yours on the first and then his the second.
That way and won’t feel too *guilty*!
You’re right, Imaginary Diva… I should visit John’s site and actually just did.
I’m going to bookmark it to keep following day by day.
First thing I’m going to read is “Take That, Treadmill” because I’ll be battling my own treadmill in the months to come.
You go, John… you’re doing an awesome job!
SageRave, slow and steady weight loss usually is a better plan for the long term.
I sure wish typing on the computer would help me lose weight. I would be losing quite a few pounds if it was. lol
Well, tater, I think that may be why my body is not proportionately sized. My fingers and hands are skinny, but my butt is big from the sitting at the computer!
Well, you could try using those pedals they have out. They look like bike pedals, only w/o the bike.
At least you could exercise your legs.
I am not to sure I have seen these pedals you are talking about? Yep, sitting like that does expand the behind. I try to forget that though.
Well, for those of you who don’t know what pedals I’m talking about, here is a link so that you can check them out.

Katharina, well, it’s the first of the year, and the first thing I’ll do after I finish blogging today is hitting that treadmill
tater03, I know how you can lose weight while typing on the computer without the puddles. Use Dragon NaturallySpeaking when the headset then you can stand up and do jumping jacks or touch your toes or waist twists! For those who don’t know what Dragon NaturallySpeaking is, it is a voice recognition system. Something I use all the time to type on the computer with.
Tater03, you must have skinny fingers like me….
Too bad the rest of the body just doesn’t seem to want to follow suit
Trick-r-treat, LOL! Totally disproportionate.
I do give my butt a workout on a regular basis walking from my stool to the fridge.
Does that count?
Roguegal, hey, I had one of those! I think that’s a great idea….. maybe I should try to resurrect that.
I’ll have kick ass legs, skinny fingers…. but I think I might have to do something with the rest of my body.
Maybe I should have added in my New Year’s Resolution to try not to blog too much?
If you use a VR system you can always stand up and exercise while you “talked” to your computer. Just make sure you have a firm solid floor otherwise you’re going to shake up your computer is well.
Tater03, they’re exactly just like bike pedals. Just without the bike, only the pedals.
And yes, you are going to need something else if you always sit around like I do…
Roguegal, thanks for the link!
It brought back some pretty interesting flashbacks
Hehehe I’d be one of those elusive size 0 or 00 people if I could lose by sitting at my computer. My entire career is here!
Imaginary Diva, you are quite welcome for the link, anytime.
Katharina, I know what you mean. My work career is here as well.
Roguegal, it seems I should place a visit to your place sometime
I can’t wait to see what other goodies you have that helps you blog, AND, lose weight at the same time.
LOL! Jumping jacks in between blog power posting I think is a great idea to clear your mind and let inspiration in
When you put it like that way, it does sound funny! But stop and think about it. You could, in between posting, stand up and do some sort of exercise. Like deep knee bends, arm twirls, or any number of stretching exercises. Now, how much of this exercising you to would depend on how much weight you would lose. Otherwise, it would basically help keep your blood flow going and you from getting stiff from settings along.
Katharina, I think you need to work very hard in not thinking about eating to maintain a size 00!
Roguegal, working from the convenience of your home is always the best. Sometimes I do wish I have more physical contact with other people though…..
Well, working from home can also be a pain in the butt! It seems every time you get really going, something happens. But you can increase your contact with people. Go to the mall and do some window shopping. I would suggest Saturday or Sunday since that is the busiest day for a mall. There’s lots of people there.
