Sounds like a great introduction to Muncher Anonymous doesn’t it? Except there isn’t such a group. At least, a search through Google to see if there are any subjects, discussions, and god forbid, support groups for munchers, turned up a big fat zero.
If there is anything in this world that I know is hard for me to do, is to stop munching. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think about eating all the time. In fact, I don’t even think about eating a quarter of the time. But, if someone around me is munching and is sharing, the urge to say “no” is very hard and mind draining.
Even practicing my mantra when I wake up and when I go to sleep of “Just Say No” is no longer doing the trick. Just the thought of having the cookies, cakes, chips right in front of me is getting through my defences. It’s not that I’m even hungry, or I crave food. It’s just that little monster inside of me that says “go ahead just have a little bit; it won’t hurt you”. Right, it just lands on my hips. I’m not 21 anymore with an athlete’s metabolism.
Did you get a chance to read an article I had posted on How To Eat Less Chocolate? Well, the author talks about taking zinc to lessen the craving. I don’t crave chocolate at all, but wish there is something “zinc” like equivalent to help stop the need to reach out and take a handful, or two, or even three……
Suggestions are very much welcome.

Thanks for dropping by!
I am guilty of being a muncher too!!
I completely identify with the need to snack.
Substituting foods is a great way to deal with munching. I have found that carrots are munchy and sweet, when the crop has been decent, and take the edge off the need to chew something sweet.
Fresh fruit is another great substitute.

Sharon! ‘Tis not the season to try and modify munchie behaviour.
You know what’s really delish though? Vegetable crips, which, if you have a mandolin, you can slice very thinly. Fry in just a touch of oil, drain, sprinkle with sea salt and there’s your potato chip alternative. Much, much better. I love the beet crisps, myself. The other thing, which seems to act as a natural appetite suppresant is to chew on a piece of peeled ginger. Works for me!

Samantha, the vegetable crisps sound delicious. I haven’t tried chewing the piece of ginger yet but I do have gingersnaps every once in a while.
Do those count?
LOL

I used to be a muncher. I would munch and graze all day, especially when I am cooking.
SageMother, hmmmm, I wonder what the chances are that there would be some great fruits or vegetables to munch on at all the christmas parties I have to attend to in the next week or so?
Samantha, those are such great tips. And you are right, I will never be able to get away from the munching.
I don’t know what a mandolin is but now I’m going to google it because your recipe sounds absolutely *delish*. I am also a big ginger fan because I use it a lot when I’m feeling a flu coming along. I didn’t know that it is a natural appetite suppresant!
SageMother, I only like chewing on fresh ginger if it is refrigerated or submerged in cold water.
Ginger has the properties to take on the surrounding flavour, but on it’s own fresh from the supermarket, I think might give you indigestion.
It’s great being cut in little, little cubes and put in tea, or ice water because it works on water retention really well.
3Plus3, I guess munching like that is ok. I figured if you’re cooking, it has to be the vegetables that you are probably munching on.
Diamond, as I can see…..
I just visited your blog and it has a yummy spaghetti recipe. I have a very big *weakness* for spaghetti also and it’s just one of those dishes I need to have a second, a third plate.
Sorry we’ve been late with the link love.
i have a habit to only eat when the kids are in bed or at school..otherwise they always steal my food…but i have a lot of weight since january-like 25 pounds…i try to keep busy as i can so i don`t eat all day when the kids are not around

Purplefrog, now that New Years is coming in a week or so, I guess both of our resolutions might end up *no more munching*.
Well then that makes (at least) three of us. I can do great with the meals, calorie counting, exercise, etc. but the munching is *very* hard to overcome. Problem is that I don’t reach for celery to munch on or it wouldn’t be so bad.
Very interesting article on chocolate and zinc! I’ve kept it around for the onset of colds and hopefully to shorten the “suffering time” but as a way to fight chocolate craving? I simply MUST give that a try!
Katharina, my sister gave me this awesome toaster oven for Christmas and I have been learning how to make my own chips!
And I went out and bought a low fat dip recipe booklet.
So, if I’m going to munch, I might as well munch healthier!
Katharina, you let me know if it works
Then, just maybe…. I’ll try it.
I didn’t think I was much of a snacker, but then I got a dog. He sits there and looks at me every time I go to the refrigerator. He really gives me something to feel guilty about when I sit there eating and he is just sitting there staring at me.
Trick-r-treat, maybe I should get a dog?
Munch on fruits…that’s what I try to do when I feel the urge…although it is not everytime that you feel like having a fruit…you have to have something loaded with calories…;)
I should not be so quick to admit this because I know it’s healthier, but I’ve really never been a fruit person and if I’d have to rely on snacking on only fruit, I’d choose not to snack at all.
I love fruit, so mostly I munch on fruit and vegetables, it stops me from wanting chocolate.
