Statistics say that a gym membership is the least used membership. You pay your monthly dues every single month for what? So that when you are ready to get serious about losing weight that it will be there when you need it? A close friend of mine told me that this is why he still has a gym membership. He’s been a member of the same gym for about 20 years and used it for 1/10th of the time.
Sounds familiar? A lot of people join fitness gyms for several reasons – to stay in shape, to lose weight and to have a healthy lifestyle. In my case, the gym rep was great in promising me a better, sexier body for less than a dollar a day. However, that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow just does not materialize on its own. You have to work hard at getting the desired results. Even the motivation of knowing that $30 is coming off my bank account every single month was not enough to get me using that gym as often as I should.
I have heard every excuse as to why people do not go to the gym even though they have a membership. Here’s been some of mine:
I had to wait for a wake-up call in order to motivate me. I woke up one day at 180 pounds at 5′2″. At this point, my weight problem really was not an issue anymore compared to the onset of depression and health issues. It was much more harder at this time to say I am going to the gym and I am going to make it work. But I did it. It’s all because I decided that I need to invest time on me.
And it was great that I still had the lifetime membership….
Sure. We all lead busy lives. But let me ask you – why wait until you really need the lifetime membership? What prevents you from starting today? And I mean today. Not tomorrow. Go grab your organizer and start planning your next ten workout schedules. Invest time on yourself. After all, you only get once chance to live your life. Why not kick some ass while you are at it?

I have to say that those excuses certainly sound familiar… uh…much too familiar! I won’t call it a resolution, I’ll just call it a life change, but I am planning to really buckle down with things like this in ‘08. Anyone care to join me?
I have used those excuses before. But now it just isn’t in the budget for a membership right now. I would LOVE to have a membership for the entire family to the fitness center we have, but until my money is right,it aint happening.
I miss going to gyms, but can’t really justify the expenditure since health issues prevent the sort of work outs that warrant a membership. The best gyms also have trainers to help you get the most out of every visit!

Katharina, you can add me to the list! It’s been a tough holiday….
All that food and drinking is really getting to places they shouldn’t!
3Plus3, there are so many options out there for family fitness! And it’s a good thing that you are not buying gym memberships for everyone because it might not be as useful as going for family walks or hiking.
You know besides Curves and the YMCA there really are not a whole lot of gyms around here anymore. The few that are here are just way to expensive for me to even consider. I can see how buying a lifetime membership would probably be a waste of money.
Do people still Jazzercise? I remember that being a fun way to get a little sweat going without having to lift too many weights!

SageRave, I think gyms are overrated. But a lot of people buy into lifetime memberships that they rarely get to put some mileage on.
I don’t know about your area, but here in Vancouver, boutique fitness gyms are cropping up everywhere. Going to one of them is like going to a high-end spa. Would love to get one of those memberships, but unfortunately, I have other better things to spend my money on
Tater03, I think a lifetime membership is worth it, if you really are gungho about fitness all the time.
What I’ve seen is that some people buy into memberships so that they can have it as a backup plan when they’re ready to start losing weight.
YMCA has really great rates. And their machines work the same way
SageMother, I still have some VCR jazzercise tapes tucked away somewhere.
Workouts used to be so simple, now, there are all these boutique workout methods that just make things so complicated!
Anyone ever try that 301 Minutes to better buns tape? Holy Cow now that was one workout I just couldn’t do. Five minutes into it I was done.
I don’t have a weight problem now, but I’m not far from having the problem. My weight gainned quite a lot since I got my new job (less stress). I’m planning to go to the gym in 2008 and I need to put those excusses away

Tater03, no I’ve never tried 301 minutes to a better buns.
But I must go and check it out. You know how expensive Brazilian butt implants are nowadays
Gym membership should be one of three options you have for staying fit. It’s easy to stop exercising if you decide you don’t want to go to the gym. Add walking, yoga, dancing–some other activity to your list that doesn’t require equipment or a drive.

David, you and me both
I’d love to have a job with less stress also. How lucky can you get?
Heart and style, that’s correct. There are more options out there, than just going to the gym.
That’s why it boggles my mind when people buy lifetime memberships at the gym and rarely use them!
getting a gym membership does sound too good, it seems like we are doing the right thing taking a positive step towards being healthy, but really it is of no use unless you really go to that gym….
Well, we all lack some sort of motivation sometimes, you know? But I’m a member of the gym and I just want to be healthy so I go about 3-5 times a week.
And since I pay $20/month I think it’s definitely worth it… but I’m not going to lie, there are some times when I have my weeks where I just don’t want to do anything… let alone go to the freakin’ gym lol!
