Why then is obesity on the increase and reaching epidemic proportions? The main cause of weight gain is a lack of perspective. Weight gain is a result of eating more food than we can use up living, laughing, loving and working. Put quite simply, no particular food can be singled out as the culprit, although it probably helps to point out that a gram of fat has twice the calories of a gram of table sugar. But it gets more interesting. An ever increasing body of scientific research on table sugar shows that some of it in the diet actually helps to curb cravings, helps prevent bingeing sessions and aids adherence to healthier, low fat diets.
Table sugar is just a natural carbohydrate, nothing more, nothing less. It is nature’s own sweetener, made up equally of fructose, and glucose. It has been used to make good food more palatable and fun for hundreds of years in exactly the same form as today.
Build a Better Breakfast
Before your next ‘well balanced’ breakfast of oats and fresh fruit, ask yourself this, ‘where’s the protein and fat?’ After all, with the exception of eggs and sausage, typical breakfast foods - cereal, fruit, toast, pastries and juice - provide you with almost nothing but carbohydrates, often in the form of sugar. That means more morning meals are highly unbalanced.
Most bodybuilders’ already know they need high quality protein - the kind found in meat, eggs and dairy - to nourish and build muscle. But fat is important at your morning meal too. That’s because, along with the protein, it slows the absorption of carbohydrates into your bloodstream, providing you with a steady supply of energy - instead of a quick sugar rush (often followed by a sugar crash). And by keeping you full longer, this protein/fat combo can also help shrink your midsection.
In a recent study, researches found that when people had eggs for breakfast, they ate 1050 fewer kilojoules during the rest of the day than when they had a bagel instead. Of course, you don’t need a written article to tell you how to make scrambled eggs. So here are some new ways to fill your belly, feed your muscles and energize your body first thing in the morning.
Toast with Tuna
Think of it this way. You’re simply trading high sugar jam for high protein tuna salad. It’s easy to make ahead of time, and by tweaking the conventional recipe to include cranberries, you get a hint of jam sweetness.
1170 can solid tuna, in brine 2tbsp dried cranberries, roughly chopped ¼ onion, minced 1 tbsp mayonnaise 2 tsp balsamic vinegar Salt & pepper to taste
Mix all the ingredients together. Serve a scoop on a piece of toasted wholegrain bread. Makes 2 servings.
Berry High Protein Yoghurt
With this recipe, you control the ingredients, the manufacturer doesn’t. And that means you can ensure it’s free of hard to avoid added sugar, while nearly having triple the protein of most ready to eat yoghurts.
450g plain yoghurt 2 cups fresh or frozen unsweetened mixed berries 4 scoops (about 80g) vanilla or strawberry whey-protein powder Sweetener to taste (optional)
Line a two cup mesh strainer with a paper coffee filter and place it over a mixing bowl. Fill the filter with the yoghurt, cover with a clean cloth or waxed paper, and set the bowl (with strainer inside) in the fridge for several hours. Much of the liquid from the yoghurt will drain into the bowl, resulting in thicker yoghurt. In a blender, puree the berries along with the whey-protein powder and sweetener. Once the yoghurt has drained, place it in a large bowl and stir in the berry puree. Serve in one cup portions and store for up to three days. Makes 4 cups.
Almond Pecan Waffles
These high protein waffles boost the protein and fat intake, while dialing back the carbs. You can make almond flower by chopping slivered almonds in a food processor.
1 cup almond flour ¼ cup finely chopped pecans ½ cup whey protein powder 1 tsp baking powder 110g low fat plain cream cheese, softened 6 eggs ¼ cup whipping or fresh cream
While your waffle iron preheats, combine the almond flour, pecans, whey protein powder and baking powder in a small bowl. In another bowl, whisk the cream cheese and two eggs until smooth. Add the remaining eggs one at a time and whisk thoroughly after each. Mix in the cream, then stir in the dry ingredients. Spoon about a third of the cup of batter onto the hot waffle iron and cook for about three minutes, until golden brown. Top with low sugar syrup (recipe below), peanut butter or fresh fruit. To let them cool, place in a zip lock bag and freeze. When you ready to eat one, just pop it into the toaster. Makes about 6 18cm waffles.
Cottage Cheese Pancakes
These pancakes are not only packed with high quality protein, but also lighter and fluffier than the classic versions. Serve with a bit of butter and five milliliters of low sugar syrup and cinnamon for each pancake. Using sugarlite cuts the kilojoules by nearly two thirds.
Low Sugar Syrup
500ml Sugarlite (Hulletts) 2/3 cup fat free milk
Combine ingredients in a pot, stir occasionally, bringing it to the boil. Stir continuously till it reaches the thread stage, remove from stove and pour over pancakes.
Pancakes
1 cup cottage cheese 2 eggs ¼ cup of butter ½ cup milk ¾ cup whole wheat flour 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tbsp sugar 1 tsp salt ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)
In a large bowl, stir together the cheese, eggs, butter and milk. Add the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and nutmeg, and blend lightly until just mixed. Grease a griddle with cooking spray and place over medium heat. Put a large scoop of batter on the griddle and use the back of a spoon to spread it out evenly. The pancake is ready to flip when you begin to see small air bubbles form, about three to four minutes. Flip and cook for another minute or two. Makes about 12 10cm pancakes.
Mocha Custard
A 350ml frappuccino contains 44g sugar and a hefty dose of caffeine, but hardly any nutrients. And really, should you ever spend R15 on a glorified cup of coffee? Instead, try this custard alternative. It will provide you with a jolt of java, a 21g infusion of protein and a hefty dose of coconut fat, which contains a healthy type of saturated fat (called lauric acid) that boosts immunity.
1 430ml can coconut milk 2 cups strong coffee (regular or decaf) 3 eggs, beaten 3 scoops (about 60g) chocolate whey protein powder Sweetener to taste Pinch of salt
In a saucepan, combine the coconut milk, coffee, beaten eggs, whey protein powder, sweetener and salt. Whisk to mix well. Gently cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to thicken and lightly coats the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat, pour into a covered pitcher, and cool quickly by placing the pitcher into an ice water bath until it’s half submerged. Serve chilled in one cup portions for a quick breakfast. Or blend it with crushed ice until smooth and thick for a frozen mocha treat. Makes 4 cups.

Very interesting article. I think that people should get up and move more often. We have a habit of eating, then lounging around watching tv, surfing the net or playing video games.
My biggest bad habit is eating sugary stuff right before bed.
I want to try those pancakes. They sound yummy and are good for you also.
Nice article. Something that people forget is that aging causes some of what people say is an “epidemic of obesity”. IF you are over 40 and have problems like arthritis, chronic pain, and other issues, these carry their own weight issues that cannot be exercised or dieted away.
Some weight issues must be accepted so that one can enjoy the quality of their life, not just fit into a size 8
Totally agree with pp. When so much of our lives is spent on the computer, in front of the tv, or just sitting at work, it’s difficult to burn what was once easy to burn off as a child. You have to make an effort to move.
I think substituting all beverages with water is the easiest way to drop weight fast.
I think it’s the fast food mentality so prevalent today. My biggest weakness is not sweets, but a fondness for cheese dishes. A four-legged friend gives me impetus to walk multiple times per day and I’m working out almost daily now too. Pre hibernation, that is!

I keep walking those dogs, so am hoping, I can get away with a little desert once in a while.
Walking is probably the best way to stay active. It’s cheaper than pill, surgery, or paying for gym membership, and your dog loves you more for all the attention they get!

3Plus3, I fall into the same pit. Since I work on the internet, that’s all I do all day. And I really have tried to work on getting up for at least an hour during the day to walk outside.
Now that the weather is so crappy, I just have to think of doing something else instead. Maybe I can go up and down the stairwells here at my condo

Tater03, I have almost the same problem as you. I just happen to like munching at night.
One time, I tried working on Bob Greene’s no eating after 7PM and failed miserably….

SageMother, I agree with you on that totally. When I was in my 20s, my active lifestyle *rock climbing, wall climbing, swimming* took a nose dive when I got diagnosed by an illness.
Years later I recovered, but had packed on a considerable amount because of the diet and medication required.
I am not sure if the obesity surveys take this into consideration, or have taken the small percentage out of their equation. Would be interesting to find out though.
SageMother, how come your feed is not parsing either?

Samantha, maybe I should also get me a dog. At least, I will have no choice but to walk it
Imaginary Diva’s last blog post..What?s Making us Fatter?
Allyn, carbonated beverages not only is instrumental with weight gain, but also when it comes to getting the icky bloating feeling.
Thanks for dropping by!
Echos, you and Samantha are really getting me motivated into getting a dog…
SageMother, not only is walking good for your health, it’s also good for your soul. Something about smelling the roses…
The secret for being fit and healthy, is eating healthy food, and moving. It’s not just about exercising, so nobody take it for granted.
Lalla Mira, you really need to combine eating healthy and being active.
I do alot of walking. My one saving grace I guess is that I am not into all the fast food. Thank goodness for small miracles.
We are getting fatter due to “beverages”. We used to get thirsty and drink water. Maybe milk (which is a food)….but not anymore! Now we have a “beverage”…..sweet tea, soda…etc. Those empty calories pack a huge punch into our daily amount and give us nothing in exchange.
Quickest way to lose weight: Switch from a beverage to water.
Tater03, have you always not liked fast food? Or is it something that you stayed away from and ended up not wanting to eat it afterwards?
Accer, recently my husband picked up coke from 7/11 and it has vitamins and minerals in it.
I thought that was a contradiction of terms, to say the least.
oh, also, the fact that fast foods and eating out makes us fat. it’s not ONLY the fast foods, its also the amounts of it. for example, in europe, their ‘large’ is equivalent to U.S.’s ’small’ size. eh, thats my two cents for the day! yay!
I agree with Accer on the beverage issue. I spend most of my time sipping water but love fruit juices, which have more calories. I know people who never have plain water.
Many folks fail to recognize the additional calories their drinking habits, alcoholic or not, can add to their weight problems.
SageMother, that’s so true. You know what they say about having at least six glasses a day of water. Some people don’t even drink one a day!
Jay, I live in Canada and I always look forward to those extra large portions when I cross the U.S. border that I could take home and eat for days!
I know what you mean…..

Something I do when getting the huge portions served in restaurants is to make sure to have the wait staff box what is left of my meal after I have tasted what I wanted. Slowly savoring the taste prevents eating so much that I stuff myself, and I have several more tastes waiting for me in the fridge!
BTW, I have no clue what is wrong with my feed.
I discovered a couple of months ago that the blood pressure medicine I am on to help my high blood pressure actually causes me to lose weight.
Ok, I admit I haven’t taken my meds in about 2 months just to see what would occur. I have dropped a whole size in my skirts and can actually were 2 sizes smaller if depending on how the skirt is made. My blood pressure is still up but I feel better just having that little bit of weight of me. I know if I can lose even more that it will help my blood pressure.

Okaaay. After reading this I’m really not going to cut out taking sugar in my tea anymore!
I am on my feet pretty much every day for anywhere from 5-9 hours a day. Mainly standing, sometimes walking but it is on a concrete floor. I have been drinking more soda than normally though, so I am going to try to switch to tea first, then flavored water then down to plain water and see what happens.
I am in the market for a new dog. i have a hard time walking without one. My buddy died in June.
Thanks for dropping by Bobo. Do you go out for lunch every day then?
Laura, I’ve heard of some that actually get the opposite effect. Their blood pressure medicine was making them again weight.
Could it be partially because you are on a special diet?
No they were making me gain weight. I stopped taking just to see if they were a culprit and they were. The meds I am on are one of the ones that causes you to gain weight.
No special diet here… unless you want to say “see-food” diet. I see food. I eat it. LOL

Ninikins, I’ve been substituting my coffee and tea sugar with honey and it tastes a lot better.
3plus3, I also get this soda fit that I can’t explain from time to time. And when I get the craving, my day is pretty much screwed with low energy if I don’t get a dose of it real fast.
Echos, I’m really so sorry to hear about your dog. They are more family than we’ll ever know.
What kind of dog were you thinking of getting?
Laura, it seems you and I have to compare notes on this *see-food diet*.
It’s so hard to be in my house with a fridge full of goodies. I can even smell them all the way from my working table.
I have found that eating tuna and eggs (not always together) for breakfast gives me more energy throughout the day, and it has also help me shed pounds a lot quicker.
To be honest I just always thought that fast food was over priced for what you get. I mean it isn’t all that great to begin with.
I also wanted to comment that sometimes it is age related like the above poster stated. My mom was gaining weight and here it had to do with her tyroid.
Leighdu, what a healthy breakfast.
It reminds me of a favourite breakfast recipe…. tuna with big tomato chunks omelette. Yum!
I would also encourage people to actually sit down, relax and enjoy their food. We scarf down massive amounts of food (far more than are required to keep us running) and it’s terribly unbalanced and none-to-tasty either. If we just took the time to enjoy eating, I bet we (as a country) could lose some weight.
Or everyone could do like me and get a hiatel hernia which causes stabbing pain if I eat too much or too fast… and causing me to be nauseous every morning. However, I wouldn’t suggest it. It’s no fun.
Nathaniel’s last blog post..Traffic Exchanges and Google Adsense
Nathaniel, that sure doesn’t sound like fun at all. But then, I wouldn’t put it past those wanna-be-celebrity-thin women who now have had the opportunity to listen to your suggestion and might actually put it to test ….
Is this something you recently had?
And you are right, we need to start relaxing and enjoying our food. Stress is a big contributor to weight gain.
I’ve always been thin (VERY THIN) but when I was in my teens I spontaneously (because I don’t know how it happened) developed this hernia. Part of my stomach is above my diaphram actually. No fun. So… I haven’t gained, or lost, any weight since I was about… 13. Only recently have I managed to gain a couple extra pounds. Which is likely the result of eating too much fast food. I’m patiently waiting for my 40’s when my metabolism will slow down and I’ll be able to get up to a healthy weight.
Heh, for all the talking about how it’s OK to be overweight and not OK to be super thin. I am super thin. Granted, I’m one of those annoying people that just stays thin. I must admit, I wish I could gain weight. I often told my mother “if there was a way I could take all that extra weight you complain about so that you lost it and I gained it, I would do it in a heartbeat!”
The fact that there are people out there that purposefully swallow tape worms… I wouldn’t put it past anyone to actually try to get a hiatel hernia. People are weird that way.
Nathaniel’s last blog post..Fat Bottom Girls
Nathaniel, the grass is always greener on the other side. My brother has the same thing happening with you, and he always wished that he got mother’s *genes* (short, think tinkerbell thirty pounds overweight) instead of dad’s (tall, thin amazons).
I had a hernia when I was younger also due to a sports injury. And that is no laughing matter at all. I hope it doesn’t continue to bother you to this day.
Back in the days when I was thin, I often ate “dinner” for breakfast. Yes, a steak, potato and veges.
You are right, everyone wants what they don’t have… but I suppose it wouldn’t make much sense to want what you’ve got… beyond wanting it bad enough to keep it… assuming it’s something that should be kept.
Nathaniel’s last blog post..Fat Bottom Girls
eating “dinner” types of food for breakfast isn’t a bad thing… it’s just like eating “breakfast food” for dinner… but i STILL want what i don’t have… i ain’t even gonna go into it, but eh lol
Have you noticed that when someone uses the word “fatter” it is assumed that weight is gained?
Being fatter can also be the body’s structure giving way to gravity, which can lead to a gain in clothing sizes without appreciable weight gain.
I don’t have a problem with wanting to eat at night after dinner, but I have a problem with not moving around enough. I need to put time aside to use the treadmill but it’s not working too well to stick with that right now. I guess that means I need some willpower.
I think that maybe now that it’s getting colder, I’ll be using it more often… that happened other years, too.
Sandra, funny that you should say that, I was chatting over with a couple of friends about the types of diet they’ve done, and apparently my friend’s mothers diet consists of eating *steak and potatoes* for breakfast, a normal lunch, and then nothing for dinner.
Nathaniel, I think what we want changes so quickly, that it’s hard to remember what we wanted a minute ago, three days from now.
Jay, LOL! On a see-food diet are we?
SageMother, I think we all nowadays use the word *fatter* loosely, especially when the media portrays it as someone that has gained unsightly weight.
And I’m sure centuries from now, *fatter* could mean ideal weight gain. Just like the romantic period where rubenesque women were preferred to anorexic ones.
Katharina, having the willpower to get on that treadmill could be a big plus! LOL!
You hear it all the time, when you get older, your body just wants to do its own thing.
I so want those pancakes now. Ok I need to shop to get the supplies but they sound better than half of the morning “diet” stuff I have tried in the past.
Do you think the day will come when society and medicine accepts that women are naturally “rounder” than men?
Right now, it seems that women are basically being taught that their bodies need to be constantly reshaped into something that isn’t natural.
