In the fun but fickle world of fashion, where trends change by the hour, tall is always in.
My cousin, a fashion designer and artist, is one of the tall ones. Everything she wears hangs from her shoulders the way it was designed to. At dinner parties or at the grocery store, she casts a fine silhouette. Sleek and stylish, it is as if her clothes enjoy being wrapped around her…
but then there are the shoes!
Like most women, my cousin loves shoes. With such a fashionable eye she can pick out an emerging trend of buckles or ballet pumps, patent or crimped leather, while the rest of us are still clopping around in wedges.
But what she loves and what she can find are two different things, for my cousin’s height comes with a not-so-small issue – her feet!
Like the rest of her, my cousin’s feet are long and thin. She simply doesn’t fit into the “normal sized” shoe. So while the rest of us leap on the new fad and strut around in our pink patent peak-a-boo shoes, she sticks to her simple collection.
Although I talk of shoes with relish, Imelda Marcos I am not. I have probably twenty pairs of shoes and some of them would be rejected by the Salvation Army. But every pair of shoes comes with a story. One awful, denim pair I own (with coloured glass squares in the toes) was bought at my favourite little shop in North London. They sit in the back of my closet, never to see the light of day again, but ever time I catch sight of a gleaming glass square I smile…
And feeling good is what shoes are all about.
You might think that they are only about fashion, but the reason we want to look good is so that we feel good. In a great pair of shoes our old jeans take on new life. In a pair of stilettos our ankles look reed-thin and our calves sculptured like those of a tennis pro. In flats we feel hip and trendy, just popping to the café for a latte and the paper. In boots we take on all weather, navigating puddles with stylish ease. Even in trainers we feel good about ourselves, proclaiming to all passers-by that we are on the way to some freakishly healthy activity!
I believe in feeling good about myself. Yes, there are lots of things I would like to change. (No, I won’t list them here!) But there are four little guidelines I use to feel good about myself and these I am very happy to share:
1. I measure myself by my own yardstick.
2. I listen to my inner voice over the assumptions of others.
3. I focus my energies on what I’ve been blessed with, rather than what I wish for.
4. I view every day as another opportunity to grow.
I believe in these principles so strongly that when I decided to create a story about a girl struggling with her self-esteem, I used these four simple points as the signposts on her journey.
The message at the heart of “walking tall” is, even if your feet are too long or short, too broad or thin and the perfect shoe is forever out of reach, just remember you can stand as tall as anyone if you believe in yourself enough!
The struggle for self-esteem can be a long journey. It’s one I’ve taken myself and so I’ve written a book about it! I’d love you to come and visit me at www.outfitinspirations.com so we can get inspired together!

Walk Tall: Living Life in the Perfect Pair of Shoes…
You might think that they are only about fashion, but the reason we want to look good is so that we feel good. In a great pair of shoes our old jeans take on new life. In a pair of stilettos our ankles look reed-thin and our calves sculptured like thos…
they say “dont critisize a man until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. once you’ve walked a mile in their shoes, you’ll be a mile away so you can critisize them as much as you want and they can’t chase after you in socks!”

I have always loved a pair of nice heels with a good pair of jeans. It just dresses the whole outfit up. Thanks for the article.
Andy, I’ve heard so many variations about “walking a mile in their shoes”, but I haven’t heard this one before…..
That’s just too funny!
Tater03, I do too! I’ve always thought that jeans need to be worn with high heels or stilettos, just to give that extra oomph!
I read this book and I really enjoyed it. It was funny but it also makes you think about what is really important in life. It made feel great about myself after a particularly bad week at work etc.

I am high heeled challenged. I have never been able to wear them or find a pair that won’t make me feel as if I am on stilts.
I can only wear heels for short bursts of time. To compensate for this, I like to collect corsets. It hink of them as “Woman armor”.
Joanne, thanks for dropping by and letting us know that you enjoyed Simone’s book. If her website is any indication, this book is a class act
3Plus3, I guess even though high heels are out, there must be some shoe *fetish* we all get into. Maybe you’re the flat heel type?
SageMother, now that’s something I have to see. I just think corsets are the epitome of womanhood. They are sexy, yet elegant and everything else

Oh, I do like a nice pair of heels with jeans. If I’m going to be doing a lot of walking I opt for flats. Why does comfort tend to feel so frumpy though (even with all the cute flats available now)? LOL
Ultimately it’s a metaphor, of course, and we should “walk tall” in the figurative sense. I prefer the view when I’m slightly elevated though!
I don’t have too many heels, but the ones I do have, I love. They are uncomfortable, but they make me feel so good, and so feminine.
Samantha, I guess being short *5′2* I’ve always thought that I looked frumpy if I didn’t add the extra six inches….
Don’t get Vegan Momma started on high heels, because she owns 9″ ones.

Jewel, I think that no matter how much more money you pay for your high heels, they don’t get any more comfortable. It’s meant to give that sexy, sensual aspect. Just not comfortable.

That is the way I am when it comes to wearing heels. I can only wear them for short periods of time because they hurt my feet way to much.
I’m so tall in heels! And I find them so difficult to walk on all day. I always open for lower heels with a pointed toe to retain some elegance. Shoes are great though.
Just as a reminder from SimoneM….
This is the last week to subscribe in September and receive a free copy of one of my eBooks “Keep Your Cup Half Full.” Thanks to all those who have supported my site! Have a great one, S. http://www.outfitinspirations.com
Tater03, I hear they are coming out with ergonomic high heels. Supposedly good for women who get aches and pains from wearing them.
Last I heard, the patent holder was waiting for a factory to snatch her design and mass produce.
Who knows?
Ninikins, it must be so-o-o nice to be so tall in heels.
I still even think that after I get a good 4″ from my heels, I still need a good 3″ more in order to feel statuesque.
You are so lucky!
I know what it is to have long feet and a short supply of stylish shoes. Today, I can proudly say, I wear a size 11 shoe-that wasn’t always the case. I think it’s great that you’ve written a book about self-esteem and feeling good about yourself. I’ve created a shoe blog specifically for women with large-size feet (10 & Up). I want them to feel good about themselves and the size of their feet and discover places to shop for gorgeous shoes. Women with plus-size feet will also come to realize there are plenty of women out there who are blessed with large size feet. The main problem I have with heels aren’t the small aches and pains, I very rarely get those. I have more problems getting blisters from them on the top of my feet.
Jewel, I usually get it on the bottom of my toes…
I am stuck with flat heels, because well I have a pretty high arch and it is hard for me to find ANY shoes that fit me comfortably.
I just hate heels. I had to war them for years, and no more. I had a time finding a size 9 in super narrow heels. And with the really pointy toe, what a nightmare.
3Plus3, it’s not so bad, with all the cute ballet flats I’ve been seeing so much of. They are such great eye candy… and comfortable!

Echos, I am curious as to why there are specialty shoes for wide feet, but never for narrow feet? I also have the same problem. I have narrow feet and shoes doesn’t seem to fit well.
I’ve had luck buying shoes from China though. From Ebay.
