I find that dieting in general is just too much of a pain in the ass because there are too many rules to remember. It takes me longer to decide on what lunch is going to be, than doing my hair or deciding what to wear for a hot date. It’s no wonder dieters succumb to the temptation of being anorexic – it’s keeping it simple with just one rule to remember – Just Don’t Eat. Of course, I love food and my body to ever swing to that end of the diet spectrum, but still I can’t help but think that there has to be a better way.
Once upon a time *when the diet dinosaurs ruled the land* and long before Jenny Craig came out with the Man Diet, losing weight was just all about counting your calories. It sounds simple and basically only has one diet rule for me – My daily maximum calorie intake is 1900 calories (Mayo Clinic, Calorie Calcualtor). Along with my HealthFitCounter which monitors my calorie intake on the go, I am making my diet work for me. I no longer have to chose between a baked potato or a salad for lunch, and I am saying goodbye *forever* to drinking that disgusting liquid meal supplement stuff.
So, what can I eat for about 1900 calories a day? A quick trip over to Mike’s Calorie & Fat Gram Chart assures me that my tastebuds are going to be very happy at the prospect of not eating bland and boring food again.

I think that once you get a feel for the number of calories in food you normally eat, you can manage portion size easier.
Remember, 1900 calories is a little more than a Burger King Whopper, or is it a little less?
Hmmmmmmm…..
I don’t count calories, but I also have a fast metabolism. I don’t think that any dieting sounds like fun, but I really wouldn’t want to count calories. I’d much rather eat whatever I want and gain the weight.
One of the best ways to lose weight is to just follow a diabetic diet. It balances your carbs and controls calories with the use of exchanges, much like the Weight Watcher’s point system. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if that isn’t where Weight Watcher’s and Jenny Craig draw their diet plans from!
SageMother, funny you should mention Burger King. My sister and mom went there yesterday and I was only able to manage to eat 1/4 of my Western Whopper Burger, but I’m sure that was more than my allotted 1900 calories a day
Counting calories is just much more simpler than remembering all the crazy diet rules. I was on GI Diet before, and that came with a full book of do-s and dont-s.
Jewel, it *must* be so nice to have that kind of metabolism (and be able to fit into any type of jeans)…
I used to have a really high metabolism rate when I was younger, but now it’s fled to *nowhere-to-be-found* land.
I do think the diabetic diet is well balanced and healthy. I don’t follow any sort of dietary regime but I’m not unmindful to making healthy choices and rewarding myself with the occasional treat. On the plus side, I like all the good-for-you stuff. On the minus, I have a real sweet tooth!
I agree, one of the best ways to loose is following a diabetic diet. The calories are counted, as well as grams of sugar.
Weight control is really very simple: You must take in no more calories than you burn. If you want to lose weight, take in fewer calories. To gain weight, take in more.
Which mean if you exceed your calories for the day by 200 you need to burn off an extra 200 by exercising.
As simple as it is to understand….it’s tough to actually do!
I think that a diabetic diet would be one of the best ones to follow. You are almost killing two birds with one stone.
If I started a diet, I would either count my calories or start a diabetic diet.
That’s a very good idea and I really need to check into that diet more deeply. It would be great having a guideline like that.
I don’t think counting calories helps me. I think making lasting changes to eating habits and eating sensibly is best – and exercise of course!
but ultimately kernow, by ‘eating sensibly’ you are actually reducing your calorie intake, and that is what makes you lose weight.
By counting the calories you get an idea of how much you are over eating.. It will help you make better decisions about what you can and can’t eat.. Some things that you think are good for diets turn out to be really high in calories/fat/sugars or all three.. you don’t find that out till you calculate the calories.
Counting calories is the only thing that I’ve found I can do well with when it comes to dieting.
I’ve found, kernow, that when I keep myself accountable by counting calories, I’ll choose that 80 calorie apple instead of the 400 calorie brownie so that I don’t end up with too big of a number at the end of the day.
If I’m naughty and choose the brownie… well then I end up sick and dizzy from having only a brownie for lunch and eventually I remember it’s not a good choice to “blow” my 400 calories set aside for lunch.
that’s right, it is about disciplining ourself to make the right choices for food.. when you know that the candy bar you are going to eat has the same calories as the large chicken salad you were going to have for lunch instead, you learn to choose he lunch!
Feven if you were just making an effort to eat healthy and sensible you would choose the apple over the brownie. You really don’t need to count calories if you get into a healthy eating pattern.
